If I could spread one message it would be, "Your dyslexic child can learn to read." In fact, your child can learn to enjoy reading. I've taught many struggling students to read using multisensory, structured and sequential lessons. I am trained in the Lindamood-Bell LiPS program, which combines features of the Orton-Gillingham program with speech therapy techniques which enhance phonemic awareness. I use the Lindamood-Bell V/V (Visualizing and Verbalizing) program to help students understand and remember what they've heard and/or read. While working as a public school resource specialist, and later as a special day class teacher, I discovered and invented lots of fun ways to make math concrete and understandable to elementary and middle school students. Teaching represents a mid-life career change for me. Most of my adult life was spent in radio broadcasting and writing. But I became fascinated with the field of education when my son was diagnosed with "specific learning disabilities." Breakthroughs in technology and neuroscience make this a tremendously exciting and promising time for people who learn differently, and for the people who love them.
